Training Workshop on the Intercalibration of Temperature Data Loggers, 7th-9th July 2025, USP, Suva, FIJI

The precise monitoring of Surface Seawater Temperature (SST) is critical for all research related to climate change and the health of marine ecosystems in the Pacific Region. The ReefTEMPS Network consists of an array of sensors collecting temperature, pressure and salinity data in the coastal marine environment of the Southwest Pacific. The network brings together several partners, responsible for acquiring data for their territories, such as the University of the South Pacific (USP, Fiji), the Pacific Community (SPC), which brings together the research forces of the small Pacific island countries, the Marine Resources Directorate (DRM) of French Polynesia, the University of
New Caledonia (UNC), the University of La Réunion/OSU-Réunion and the IRD. The time series acquired go back as far as the 1950s, and major work has been carried out to clean up, perpetuate and enhance them to ensure their validity and traceability. The team in charge of the instrumentation is ISO-9001 certified and has implemented an intercalibration protocol for SBE56-type sensors to guarantee the quality of the observations measured.

This intercalibration protocol has been presented and implemented during this 3-day training course, which was hold at USP on 7, 8 and 9 July 2025. The course concluded on a presentation of the new sensor output data qualification tool recently developed for ReefTEMPS.

Funded by the French Ministery for Europe and foreign affairs, this training is intended to be the first step into the organization of an International Research Network for the Pacific oceanographic observation.
